This money will be distributed to scamming victims who have done the 2 steps listed below. At this point, exactly how the money is going to be distributed has not been decided but if you don't file, you don't have a chance. Hurrah!!!!!! :applause: One miracle for the victims! $18 million dollars is just a drop in the sea for the amount that these devils looted from their victims. But anyway better than nothing at all. Hope WU will be the next to get fine and $18 million is not a big deal at all.

That will help for people in US, but what about all victims from other countries? Isn't there an e-mail address for Federal Trade Commission to use for foreign citicens?
I don't speak English well enough to be able to call. It is one thing to write but totally different to talk.

Also, prepare for the scammers to start sending out emails claiming to be MG and offering your money back for a "small processing fee".

http://www.reuters.com/article/BROKER/i ... 0720091020" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
WASHINGTON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - MoneyGram International (MGI.N) will pay $18 million dollars to settle charges it turned a blind eye to fraud perpetrated by people who used the money transfer company to receive funds, the Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday.

The FTC said that, between 2004 and 2008, MoneyGram employees worked with "fraudulent telemarketers and other con artists" who scammed U.S. consumers out of more than $84 million, the FTC said in a statement.

The money was sent within the United States and to Canada, the FTC said.

"Many of defendant's Canadian agents that have received fraud-induced money transfers from U.S. consumers and paid out such transfers to the fraudulent telemarketers have either been active or complicit participants in the underlying scams," the FTC said in court documents.

I just don't get it or did I miss something? The article mentioned 84 million dollars within the USA and to Canada lost to counterfeit checks, lottery or prize schemes, guaranteed loans and mystery shopping. Does romance scamming fall into any of these topics and I am sure that all of these scams are pretty much world wide. I also don't understand why this is just hitting the media now.
Maybe we can still use this to get the word out and the unbelievers to understand a little better.

When it comes to this $18 million pot intended to be given back to the victims, I am afraid that most of Romance Scam victims will fall in the last part of the priority list. As what the Police officer told me when I was in UK, I have no case to file against my scammer because there was no crime done. The situation was, I engaged myself to a relationship with a person. He asked me money and I gave it to him with my own will. Just like any other relationship, things can go wrong. My story can be different from the other victims so I'm not generalizing the outcome of recovering the money back. So, on my part I know that recovering a part of my money is microscopic. If there will be any, I will give all my share willingly to other victims who needed it more than I do. I am not a rich person but I know there are many who needed it more than I do.

It is exactly the same with me as with The Wild Geese. I don't think it is possible for persons outside US to recover money from MoneyGram. I don't even think I will try, even if I acually filed to the police in my country. They put it down as unable to proof as the crime took place in another country.

Try the 2 steps she talks about there in the post Didi,

1. File a complaint report with Moneygram
2. Contact the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Consumers interested in the process of redress administration should call 202-326-3755.

Maybe you wont get one red cent back and then again ,maybe you will. If you don't try you won't thats for sure !!

Thanks for squeezing the link together Wayne !! :)

Gigs
As I said above I am not able to talk about such things in English, it demands words I don't even know about. If I can do it by e-mail it is okay, but not by calling. I don't know how to write a complaint report - or where to find a form, so I have given up the thought itself.
I am happy if american citicens will be able to get money back.
