Pictures stolen from the real Lt. Gen. Olivier de Bavinchove, African scammers are even using his name.

I found out about RomanceScam a couple of months ago after a plague of very obvious fakers on Facebook and Skype so I am now very suspicious.

All previous ones were pretending to be either US or UK Military personnel. Today was a first. I found French Army Lieutenant General Olivier de Bavinchove on the NATO site after an attempted contact on Skype.

The Skype picture was blurry but it didn't look like the same person. I sent him the last paragraph from the NATO bio which describes the real General as being married with two children. So not the sort of person who ought to be looking for any kind of relationship anyway.

He was blocked and reported to Skype in very short order!

Indeed, there are dozens of Skypes, almost always without avatar (yet). I would assume that it is, with no exception, scammers from the Francophone countries Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin.
